The views are incredible. The hike takes somewhere between 2 and 5 hours depending on your speed and how many pictures you take along the way. Start in Fira and move north through Firostefani and then Imerovigli (this part of the path feels more like a village sidewalk). From Imerovigli to Oia it\u2019s largely rural with only a few shops or restaurants on this stretch of path. Most people will want to wear a sturdy running shoe for the walk but I\u2019ve certainly seen people do it in flip flops. The route isn\u2019t completely marked but it\u2019s fairly intuitive: stay on the path that follows the edge of the caldera and walk north (when in doubt stay to the left\/west). Of course, it\u2019s fine to do the walk in the opposite direction but it feels more natural (to me) to walk north to Oia and the island\u2019s tip. And walking into Oia from the hills above is an awesome finish. If it\u2019s July or August I\u2019d highly recommend starting before 8am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-get-a-fish-pedicure\">Get a Fish Pedicure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While strolling through the town of Fira, make a stop to get a fish therapy treatment for the hands or feet at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Attraction_Review-g482942-d4004267-Reviews-Fish_Spa_Kangal_Santorini_Wellness_Center-Fira_Santorini_Cyclades_South_Aegean.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Fish Spa Kangal Wellness Center<\/a>. An insanely fun and unique way of seeing the caldera. There are different tours that go different places \u2013 all leave from Perivolos in the south of the island. The shortest tour (\u201cSouth Tour\u201d) visits nearby Red Beach and White Beach and lasts about 90 minutes. The medium-length (\u201cVolcano Tour\u201d, 140 minutes) goes all the way into the caldera and stops for a swim in the hot springs by the volcano. The longest tour (\u201cExtreme Volcano Tour\u201d, 200 minutes) takes the volcano tour and adds Thirassia and Ammoudi Bay. The tours that go into the caldera are pretty intense and the waves can be big. Expect maximum wind and minimum facilities \u2013 there are no bathrooms at the top. 4\u20ac adults, kids free. 8am-3pm Tuesday-Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ride-the-donkeys\">Ride the Donkeys<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ride the donkeys either from the Old Port up to Fira or from Amoudi Bay up to Oia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-explore-the-santorini-countryside\">Explore the Santorini Countryside<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the advantages of <a href=\"https:\/\/holidayify.com\/ro\/inchirieri-auto-santorini-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">renting a car in Santorini<\/a> \u2013 you can get away from the main towns and explore the beautiful countryside. The island\u2019s small \u2013 you can almost always see the sea \u2013 but there\u2019s lots of farmland (especially in the south) and you can\u2019t drive for very long without stumbling across a winery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dinner-with-a-view\">Dinner with a View<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The food is often better when you go to a restaurant without a view. But regardless, you have to have dinner with a view of the caldera at least one night while in Santorini. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Mezzo (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mezzorestaurant.gr\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mezzo<\/a> is my favorite restaurant with a view on Santorini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kamari-beach-santorini\">Kamari Beach, Santorini<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Good swimming (though it\u2019s a pebble-beach) and lots of restaurants. The pedestrian only street along the beach is fun to walk at night when it gets quite busy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-swim-in-the-hot-springs\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/santorini-l753\/santorini-semi-private-luxury-catamaran-day-cruise-t107344\/?partner_id=6L39LC0&amp;utm_medium=online_publisher&amp;placement=other\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Swim in the Hot Springs (opens in a new tab)\">Swim in the Hot Springs<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Jump from the boat into the cold water of the caldera then swim towards the warm water of the volcanic hot springs. It never gets hot but it\u2019s warm enough to never feel the need to get out. The only way to get to the hot springs is by doing a boat tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-emporio\">Emporio<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On the way to Perissa beach in the south of Santorini you\u2019ll find this magical little town. There\u2019s almost never any tourists here and though it\u2019s small it\u2019s still plenty big enough to get good and lost in the tangle of alleyways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lioyerma-public-swimming-pool\">Lioyerma Public Swimming Pool<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your hotel doesn\u2019t have a pool this is a good option if you\u2019re staying in Oia \u2013 but I don\u2019t think I\u2019d come all the way from Fira just for the pool. No fee, just buy a drink or some food and you can sit all day. Nice view. (And has a sunset view too.) This is a great way to finish the Fira to Oia hike. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Address (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lioyerma.gr\/\" target=\"_blank\">Address<\/a> of Lioyerma Lounge Cafe Pool Bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-watch-the-sunset-in-oia\">Watch the Sunset in Oia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Bring a bottle of wine and hang out on the cliffs of Oia watching the sun set. It is busy so be prepared for crowds. All the restaurants are good but Ammoudi Taverna is my favorite. It\u2019s surprisingly quiet down here and you can usually get away without a reservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-atlantis-books-in-oia\">Atlantis Books in Oia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a classic <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"little bookstore (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/atlantisbooks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">little bookstore<\/a>. Often named as one of the top 10 bookshops in the world. Simply wonderful. Be sure to support the store and buy something. They also sell a self-made map of Santorini (worth the 5\u20ac) with the staff\u2019s favorite things to do around the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-museum-of-prehistoric-fira\">Museum of Prehistoric Fira<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On the main street in Fira this small museum is worth a 45 minute visit. It\u2019s not huge but is especially interesting if you visit Akrotiri first. A 5-minute walk away is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Attraction_Review-g482942-d196405-Reviews-Megaro_Gyzi_Museum-Fira_Santorini_Cyclades_South_Aegean.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Megaro Gyzi museum<\/a> (near the Catholic church). It\u2019s smaller still but worth a look if you want more Santorini history. From the bus stop or car park it\u2019s about a 15 minute walk into the beach. (Sometimes closed due to the risk from falling rock, proceed at your own risk.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lighthouse-on-southern-tip-of-santorini\">Lighthouse on Southern Tip of Santorini<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The lighthouse is the destination but the draw is the incredible views looking north into the caldera \u2013 very different than the views from Fira or Oia and you can really see the circular nature of the caldera from this vantage point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-explore-the-fishing-villages-on-east-coast-of-island\">Explore the Fishing Villages on East Coast of Island<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several small villages on the east coast of the island (north of Monolithos) that are worth a visit. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Yalos (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yalos-santorini.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yalos<\/a> is one of the better restaurants on the island and a good stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-take-the-boat-to-thirassia-island\">Take the Boat to Thirassia Island<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Thirassia forms the western side of the caldera and was connected to Santorini before the volcanic eruption. It\u2019s inhabited, has some good tavernas, and is worth the 1\u20ac boat ride to visit. Boats leave several times a day from Ammoudi and the Old Fira port. Good restaurants are spread along the beach front. <a aria-label=\"Tranquillo (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Tranquilo-Bar-Perissa-Santorini\/425126774210058\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tranquillo<\/a> is the funnest beach bar. <a aria-label=\"Seaside (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Restaurant_Review-g657830-d1893185-Reviews-Sea_Side_by_Notos-Perivolos_Santorini_Cyclades_South_Aegean.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Seaside<\/a> is the best restaurant. Perissa is about a 30 minute drive from Fira and 45 minutes from Oia. Perivolos Beach is the southern part of the same stretch of sand but there\u2019s little to distinguish one beach from the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-santorini-helicopter-tour\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/santorini-l753\/20-minute-santorini-helicopter-flight-t85575\/?partner_id=6L39LC0&amp;utm_medium=online_publisher&amp;placement=other\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Santorini Helicopter Tour (opens in a new tab)\">Santorini Helicopter Tour<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is pretty close to unforgettable. A wonderful tour above Santorini, the volcano, the caldera, and all the villages perched along the cliff. From May to October the cable car runs every 20 minutes, 6:30 to 22:00 \u2013 a little longer hours in July and August, and a reduced schedule from November until April. It costs 4\u20ac for adults and 2\u20ac for children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-greek-cooking-class\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/santorini-l753\/wine-and-food-lovers-tour-wine-tasting-cooking-class-t27841\/?partner_id=6L39LC0&amp;utm_medium=online_publisher&amp;placement=other\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Greek Cooking Class (opens in a new tab)\">Greek Cooking Class<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The food in Santorini is amazing. Obviously, it\u2019s easy to enjoy plenty of great food without doing a tour but the guides are so knowledgeable and the tours so fun it\u2019s really worth doing one. Like any Santorini tour the odds of doing one and then regretting it are almost zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-dance-bar\">Best Dance Bar<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Koo Club<\/strong> is in central Fira and gets going about 11pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-funnest-bar-in-santorini\">Funnest Bar in Santorini<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>200 meters south of the Koo Club is the crazy little bar <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"2 Brothers (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com.tr\/Restaurant_Review-g482942-d4339889-Reviews-Two_Brothers_Bar-Fira_Santorini_Cyclades_South_Aegean.html\" target=\"_blank\">2 Brothers<\/a>. If you let the bartender hit you over the head with a bat (while wearing a helmet) you get a cheap liquor shot. It sounds obnoxious (and it is) but the saving grace is that everyone here is super friendly and there\u2019s very little attitude. Good times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-greek-bar\">Best Greek Bar<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to party with the locals (or Greeks from the mainland) then <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Mamounia (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/mamouniaclub.santorini\/?rf=403866846336349\" target=\"_blank\">Mamounia<\/a> is the place. Of course, being a Greek bar, it doesn\u2019t get busy until after 1pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-singles-bar-or-place-to-meet-other-travelers\">Best Singles Bar or Place to Meet Other Travelers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tropical is one of my <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"favorite bars (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/tropicalbarsantorini\/\" target=\"_blank\">favorite bars<\/a> in Santorini (single or not) and has great views. Friendly staff and something about the layout make it the best place to meet solo and single travelers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-bar-in-oia\">Best Bar in Oia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hasapiko (also called <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Mary Kay\u2019s (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/hassapiko.gr\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Kay\u2019s<\/a>) is a great throwback bar with old timers and tourists sitting around while the music thumps. A small crowd usually moves about on the tiny dance floor. This is the only bar in Oia \u2013 but great. Gets busy about 10 or 11pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-dessert\">Best Dessert<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to try a baklava and ice cream if you\u2019re in Greece. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Lotza (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Lotza\/627653537267727\" target=\"_blank\">Lotza<\/a> in Oia serves the best baklava on the island. (Zotos in Fira has the best gelato on Santorini.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-restaurant-with-sunset-view-in-oia\">Best Restaurant with Sunset View in Oia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Elinikon (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/SantoriniElinikon\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\">Elinikon<\/a> is a new restaurant with tons of charm. Delicous small plates that are best shared. There you\u2019ll find a castle, a church, and these marvelous views of the entire island. The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"6-Hour Best of Santorini (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/santorini-l753\/6-hour-best-of-santorini-experience-tours-t72422\/?partner_id=6L39LC0&amp;utm_medium=online_publisher&amp;placement=other\" target=\"_blank\">6-Hour Best of Santorini<\/a> is an easy way to visit the most interesting Santorini villages (Pyrgos, Oia, and others).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-eat-local-farm-food\">Eat Local Farm Food<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many little farms on Santorini and they produce some wonderful local food. A good way to experience this is at the rustic <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Good Heart restaurant (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/thegoodheartsantorini.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Good Heart restaurant<\/a> (they have their own farm) in south Santorini (about a 15 minute drive from Fira and easy to find).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-gyro-in-santorini\">Best Gyro In Santorini<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the <a href=\"https:\/\/holidayify.com\/ro\/traditional-greek-foods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gyro<\/a> and souvlaki shops that target tourists make some pretty average food. Not Lucky\u2019s. This is the real thing and just as good as anything you\u2019ll find in Athens or mainland Greece. <a aria-label=\"Lucky\u2019s (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Luckys-Souvlaki\/218527231508121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lucky\u2019s<\/a> is on the main street of Fira and a 3 minute walk from the bus station. (Ask anyone and they\u2019ll point you in the right direction.) Pito Gyros in Oia is also good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-greek-easter\">Greek Easter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you happen to be in Santorini for Greek Easter (usually different dates than western Easter) be prepared for something special. On the night of Easter Friday go to Pyrgos where the whole town is magically lit with candles. Saturday night be prepared for fireworks (Fira is the best spot to see them) when the fast ends at midnight. And on Easter Sunday many Greek restaurants will have a special menu with roasted pork and greek dishes (be sure to reserve a table in advance).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-day-trip-or-overnight-trip-to-ios\">Day Trip or Overnight Trip to Ios<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The great beaches on Ios and its proximity to Santorini make it the best day trip island from Santorini \u2026 but an overnight trip is better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-place-to-stay-in-santorini\">Best Place To Stay in Santorini<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can stay in this windmill. Really! It\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/LocationPhotoDirectLink-g482941-d580920-i138002701-Golden_Sunset_Villas-Oia_Santorini_Cyclades_South_Aegean.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Windmills Suite at Golden Sunset Villas<\/a> in Oia and it\u2019s pretty incredible. In the village of Oia, guests can find charming cafes and restaurants. Fira, the lively capital of Santorini, is around 10 km away. Public parking is possible near the complex. Guests at Golden Sunset can start their day with a buffet breakfast, enriched with Greek products. Room service is also available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-thing-to-do-on-final-night-in-santorini\">Best Thing To Do On Final Night in Santorini<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"White Door Theatro (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitedoorsantorini.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">White Door Theatro<\/a> puts on an unbelievably fun show about a Greek family wedding. There\u2019s singing, dancing, and a simple storyline. Guests are made to feel part of the wedding party.
