Xanthi<\/strong> is a city in Thrace<\/strong>, northeastern Greece<\/strong>. It is the capital of the Xanthi regional unit of the region of East Macedonia and Thrace. Its narrow streets continue to bear the traces of Ottoman architecture. The different ethnic groups (Turks, Bulgarians, Greeks, Armenians, people from Epirus, Halkidiki, Eastern Rumelia, Asia Minor and the Pontus region) lived and worked side-by-side, contributing to the social and cultural melting pot of Xanthi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xanthi shares Kavala Airport<\/strong>, 44km southwest, near Hrysoupoli, with coastal Kavala. Also you may take a flight ticket<\/a> for Thessaloniki, its 220km to Xanthi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The bus station<\/a> is 700m south of Kentriki Plateia. Dimokritou (later Karaoli) leads to Kentriki Plateia from the bus station. Buses travel to Komotini (\u20ac5, one hour, eight daily), Thessaloniki (\u20ac19, 2\u00bd hours, nine daily), Athens (\u20ac61, nine hours, one daily) and Alexandroupoli (\u20ac8, one hour, eight daily). Buses also serve northern Pomakohoria villages (\u20ac3.80, 1\u00bd hours, two daily) and Stavroupoli to the west. Buses (\u20ac90) leave daily at 9.30am and 5.30pm for Bulgarian destinations Svilengrad, Harmanli, Haskovo and Plovdiv (Philippopouli in Greek).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the source of the Nestos River<\/strong> until Abdera, and from there until Porto Lagos<\/strong> and Lake Vistonida<\/strong>, you\u2019ll find a majestic blend of earth and water. The Nestos River<\/strong> cuts across the Rhodopi Mountains<\/strong>, trying to reach the sea, snaking in and out of the mountain range and creating the famous \u2018Nestos Straits<\/strong>\u2019. The birthplace of Democritus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Here you\u2019ll find one of the most important archaeological sites in northern Greece<\/strong>. The first Greeks that settled here in the ancient city of Abdera<\/strong> were from the Ionian city of Teo. The Klazomenes, from Asia Minor, came later in 654 BC and Democritus was born here. Its marvellous small museum will delight you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
